Delaware MGVs Teach Pollination and Beneficial Insects to Woodward Campers

    Jul 31, 2017

It was a perfect late June morning in the garden where Woodward Elementary campers, an assortment of friendly bugs and Delaware Master Gardener Volunteers met to explore pollination. The insects were intentional as the lesson was on pollination and “good” and “bad” bugs. MGV Nora Hiland brought a wealth of fun facts and a variety of flowers that campers examined through magnifying glasses as the MGV helpers pointed out how each type of flower was pollinated. Nora pulled out the “really fun stuff” – live insects in magnifying cases and dead insects in baggies.

Delaware Campers Learn About Water Cycles and Photosynthesis

    Jul 26, 2017

Delaware Master Gardener Volunteers finally had a beautiful Thursday morning on June 8 to introduce energetic Woodward Elementary campers to the mysteries of the water cycle and photosynthesis. MGV Nora Hiland (aided by Patti Sharpe's fun posters) described the evaporation-transpiration-precipitation-infiltration hydrologic cycles in easy, fun terms. Nora then introduced a bit of the magic of photosynthesis and used celery to demonstrate the vascular “tubal” structure of plants.
