Delaware Master Gardener Volunteers finally had a beautiful Thursday morning on June 8 to introduce energetic Woodward Elementary campers to the mysteries of the water cycle and photosynthesis. MGV Nora Hiland (aided by Patti Sharpe's fun posters) described the evaporation-transpiration-precipitation-infiltration hydrologic cycles in easy, fun terms. Nora then introduced a bit of the magic of photosynthesis and used celery to demonstrate the vascular “tubal” structure of plants.

Ever wonder how an initiative started from a state organization can have so many positive impacts on a organization and community? Well, that is what the State Master Gardener, “GROW Ohio-Feed the Hungry” initiative did in Hancock County. In early January, Bill Jones, Hancock County Master Gardener coordinator received information about how the Ohio Master Gardener Volunteer groups could participate in raising and gleaning produce to donate to food banks to feed the hungry. The initiative was patterned after the book, Katie’s Cabbage.

The library gardens provide an interesting variety of gardens used by the library patrons for quiet reflection and also ideas for their own gardens. A Children's Garden is used for a variety of presentations aimed to prick the interest of gardening in children. Virtually every Warren County MGV has done work at this Waynesville library horticultural site. Submitted by Nancy McLaughlin

Master Gardeners are often asked to support the community with their expertise. This time, when asked to judge a 4-H flower contest at the Hocking County fair, I had no idea what to expect. There were critters created from wood and old tires, children made from old oil drums, faeries in a galvanized garden tub, scarecrows, pumpkins and even minions in the competition. Using flowers, props and their imagination, county 4-H club members create their own displays. The beautiful results add floral interest to the grounds.
