It was a perfect late June morning in the garden where Woodward Elementary campers, an assortment of friendly bugs and Delaware Master Gardener Volunteers met to explore pollination. The insects were intentional as the lesson was on pollination and “good” and “bad” bugs. MGV Nora Hiland brought a wealth of fun facts and a variety of flowers that campers examined through magnifying glasses as the MGV helpers pointed out how each type of flower was pollinated. Nora pulled out the “really fun stuff” – live insects in magnifying cases and dead insects in baggies.

Neither wind, nor rain, nor thunder could slow down the lightning speed Franklin County MGVs worked so that all 500 plants were in the ground in less than 2 hours for this outgrowth of the Heritage Gardens project at the Governor’s Mansion.
Working in conjunction with many Partners such as ODNR, Expo Staff, ODOT, Meisner and Associates Landscaping as well as former First Lady Hope Taft, Franklin County MGVs hope the early efforts and persistence will pay off with good sized plants for the State Fair that starts on July 26th.

Master Gardener Volunteers are always looking for ways to make an impact in the community. However, they like to have a little fun too! In October, the Miami County Master Gardener Volunteers won the Director’s Choice Award for their entry in the annual Fall Farm Fest Scarecrow Contest hosted by the Miami County Parks District. The festival is held at the Lost Creek Reserve and enjoys tens of thousands of visitors each fall to enjoy a variety of autumn activities and contests.
