Licking County's Learning Gardens Open House

March 20, 2020

Licking County Master Gardener Volunteers have created an awe-inspiring Learning Garden located behind the Extension Office. Every year on the 3rd Saturday in July, they hold an Open House event in the gardens adorn with garden flags, fairy gardens, colorful umbrellas, music, free food and activities for young visitors. This past year’s theme was “Something to Crow About.” Garden Chairs were to create a scarecrow for each of their gardens. Visitors enjoyed the many different plots including a Certified Monarch Waystation, a cutting garden, dahlia garden, pioneer garden, container garden, phenology garden and so much more. Certified Arborist, Jim Murphy shared “How to Grow Mushrooms with Logs” and Jim and Mary Competti, authors of the book “Raised Row Gardening,” spoke about the techniques of vegetable gardening. The 2019 season experienced an increase in attendance to the Open House with well over 200+ attendees. This was a surprise since the day’s temperature peaked around 100°. This year’s Open House will be held on Saturday, July 18.
