    MGVs of Clark CountyThe Master Gardeners of Clark County and Ohio State University Extension (OSUE) showcased their gardens at their annual Gateway Garden Jubilee on August 7th.  The event was held in the Gateway Learning Gardens at the OSU Extension, 4400 Gateway Boulevard, Springfield, OH. Three new gardens developed by the Master Gardener class of 2010 were featured.

MGVs for Victory GardensMaster Gardener Volunteers along with Program Coordinators Susie Broidy and Pam Thullen and employees from Benjamin Steel planted the 10,000 square foot Victory Garden in the Gateway Learning Gardens at the Clark County Extension office for the 2nd year in a row.  Over 20 volunteers planted corn, beans, tomatoes, peppers and many other vegetables.  The harvest is given to the 2Amanda Kincaid with Sunflower seedsnd Harvest Food Bank of Clark and Champaign Counties to be distributed among local food banks.  In 2009, more than 4,600 pounds of produce was donated.

At their annual banquet on Monday, June 7, the Erie County Master Gardeners celebrated ten years of volunteer horticulture work in Erie County. The group has grown to around 50 active volunteers since the first training class was held in 2000.

Clark County Master Gardener Volunteers held the first (and hopefully annual) Perennial Plant and Barn Sale on a very cold Saturday in May.  What could have been a disaster because of the weather actually turned out to be a fantastic event.  MGVs at plant sale

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Master Gardener volunteers love plants and teaching others about gardening. So much so that they spent over 151,000 hours last year leading beautification projects, giving horticultural presentations and raising gardening awareness. Their volunteer efforts resulted in $3.3 million worth of community service contributions throughout Ohio.

The contributions of Master Gardener volunteers will be celebrated during Master Gardener Volunteer Program Week, May 17-24. This year’s theme is “Master Gardener Volunteers Give Back,” and activities and programs will be held throughout Ohio’s counties emphasizing that theme.

“The purpose of Master Gardener Volunteer Program Week is to recognize the outstanding MGV programs in the state and the work that our volunteers are doing in their communities,” said Pam Bennett, Ohio State University Extension statewide Master Gardener Volunteer coordinator. “Each county will celebrate the week by selecting a program, new or ongoing, that best emphasizes this year’s theme.”

A little rain didn't stop the Arbor Day events at the Dawes Arboretum on Saturday May 1.  An estimated 150 people stopped by the Master Gardener booth to discuss their gardening concerns with the county experts. Master Gardeners were prepared with handouts of most asked questions and timely gardening events. They also gave away 120 daylilies grown from their own demonstration garden. This annual event is something we really enjoy being involved with and it gives us an opportunity to connect with the community.

OSU Extension Licking County Master Gardener Volunteers will once again be holding their annual conference on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at the OSU/COTC Newark Campus in the Reese Center from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This popular event is open to the public.

Yes, there is still snow piled everywhere, and the groundhog told us that spring will not come early this year.  But the Fayette County Master Gardener Volunteers have been working on garden plans, and are preparing to present a new series of workshops that will share tips and techniques that will help you grow fruits and vegetables in your own back yard.  Those who attended some or all of last year’s sessions will find new information anddifferent topics, so don’t hesitate to plan on coming back again this year.
